Take a Trip to Tulum For a Full-Fledged Wellness Retreat

The Mexican city of Tulum has become massively popular in the past few years years, thanks to its elaborate archaeological sites, pristine beaches, plethora of yoga and wellness activities, and unmatched natural beauty. You know, just to name a few reasons.

Even though traveling to Tulum has just recently become trendy with the travel and fashion bloggers of Instagram, Tulum has been a favorite among yogis and spiritual seekers for decades.

Located about two hours from Cancun on the Riviera Maya, Tulum attracts visitors seeking relaxation, health, and a deeper connection to nature, making it the perfect destination for your next wellness-focused getaway.

From sweat lodges to outdoor gyms and exotic swimming holes to delicious island food, here are 9 things to do in Tulum to turn your trip into a one-of-a-kind wellness retreat. They will leave you feeling refreshed, restored, and ready to kick some butt on whatever goal you want to tackle next.

1. Partake in a Tamazcal

Get your sweat on with a type of traditional Mexican sauna. A tamazcal is a type of sweat lodge that was originally used as a healing ritual by the ancient Mayans as a way to purify or cleanse the body and spirit. Volcanic rocks are placed near or inside the dome structures, where you will sit and sweat anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour. The dome is thought to represent the womb, and when you leave the tamazcal you are, in a sense, reborn.

There are opportunities for tamazcal experiences all over Tulum, like at the Maya Tulum Resort spa or with Yäan Wellness, for example. Pricing can range from $80–$150+ depending on the host.

2. Swim with Whale Sharks

Use your trip to Tulum to have an unforgettable swim. Between May to September, hundreds of whale sharks flock to the Caribbean to feed off plankton for an all-out buffet. It makes for an exhilarating swimming experience that will get your heart racing, your blood flowing, and your adrenaline pumping at full force.

With a tour operator like Riviera Adventours, you can take a private or group snorkel expedition with whale sharks. You might even see other cool critters like lobster, conch, starfish, blowfish, and sea turtles as you swim around! Lunch, air-conditioned transportation, coffee, and gear are all included. This tour starts at $185.

3. Cool Off by Cenote Hopping All Day Long

If swimming with sharks is a bit out of your comfort zone, you can still enjoy the waters of Tulum in a slightly more relaxing way. Cenotes are natural, fresh-water pools within limestone surroundings made from the collapse of underground caverns. They are a huge tourist attraction for the Riviera Maya region, since they’re so naturally beautiful, and some are even found within elaborate caves that are great for exploring.

When the weather is hot, there is nothing more refreshing than diving into a cenote; they’re filled with rainwater, making the water clear, fresh, and chilly. Head to the Gran Cenote for swimming and snorkeling, or Cristalino Cenote for an exhilarating sinkhole and cave expedition.

4. Dine on Some Healthy Tropical Treats

Once you work up an appetite, refuel with some healthy food. Pop into Raw Love inside the Ahau Resort for delicious smoothie bowls, raw pizza, and vegan treats that are made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Better yet, you can enjoy it all while lounging in a hippie, chilled-out atmosphere.

For a heartier meal, head to Kitchen Table — a farm-to-table restaurant totally integrated into its jungle surroundings. The entire restaurant operates with only a wooden grill, a bar, and ice boxes full of fresh, local produce, resulting in delicious fish dishes, vegetables, and healthy fare in a dramatic setting.

What better way to feel inspired than to take in the earth’s natural beauty?
