Openfit LIVE Yoga Classes: What to Expect

Whether you’re an Openfit member who wants to know what to expect from an Openfit LIVE yoga class, or you’re thinking of signing up for the app and want to understand its breadth of options, there’s a spot reserved for you at your home yoga studio.

“Everyone is welcome at Openfit LIVE, no matter where you are on your yoga journey, from absolute beginner to coming back from injury to an experienced yogi who’s looking for a challenge,” says Openfit LIVE trainer Jennifer Fuller, an ACE-certified personal trainer who holds a host of yoga certifications.

“We work to make everyone feel safe, supported, and connected,” she says. “And we have a lot of fun, too.”

What Kind of Workout Is Yoga?

Yoga is something of an umbrella term. There are many types and styles, including some that focus on building strength and power, while others are designed for calming the mind and gently increasing flexibility.

With Openfit LIVE, there are three levels, says Fuller, but it’s not a standard, straightforward progression in which you “graduate” to a new level. Instead, you can choose based on the kind of workout you want:

Level 1/beginner offers classic poses and sequences, with plenty of explanation and steady pacing.

Yoga Calm is still geared toward beginners, but is what Fuller calls a “nudge more advanced” since you hold the poses for longer.

Yoga Flow is considered intermediate to advanced, with backbends and balance poses designed to challenge you and build on the work you’ve done in other yoga classes, whether taken on Openfit LIVE or our on-demand program, Yoga52.

Every yoga class includes suggestions on modifications, says Fuller, so if you’re feeling like taking on a Yoga Flow challenge but not sure if you’re ready, make the leap. The instructor will guide you through a class that meets you at your level.

What Will I Do in an Openfit LIVE Yoga Class?

Each yoga class is unique, but you can expect a blend of classic poses:

And more, combined with some creative transitions and new variations on the classics.

If you’d like feedback and suggestions on your form, just turn on your camera, says Fuller. That way, the instructor can see you and give you appropriate cues, just like you’d experience in a yoga studio.

After class, Fuller texts everyone who provides a phone number and checks in to see if they have any requests for upcoming classes or want more clarification on a cue they received in class. And yes, if there are 50 people in class, she texts and interacts with all 50.

“This is a big part of what’s great about Openfit LIVE: the sense of connection you get,” she says. “It’s highly personalized support, right in your home.”

I’ve Never Done This Kind of Workout Before — Can I Still Sign Up?

Absolutely! Openfit LIVE was designed to be welcoming for everyone, and to take the intimidation factor out of live instruction.

“Walking into a yoga studio for the first time can make many people feel nervous, whether it’s their first time doing yoga or it’s a studio that’s new to them,” says Fuller. “With Openfit LIVE, your studio is right at home, so you already feel comfortable.”

Do I Need Equipment for This Class?

One major benefit of doing yoga at home is that you don’t need any equipment. Although a mat is helpful for cushioning, you can also do yoga on a carpeted area without a mat.

If you’re new to yoga or coming back from injury, though, you may want to have some props nearby to support you in certain poses. Those might be a chair, a stack of books, or yoga blocks if you have them. These aren’t necessary, but they help you feel more stable and supported in some poses, especially if you’re playing with your balance.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Yoga?

Because of its focus on breath as well as movement, yoga provides a wealth of body awareness, in addition to greater strength, flexibility, and increased range of motion, says Fuller.

There’s ample research supporting yoga’s benefits, including:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Greater strength
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved sleep
  • More energy
  • Healthy bones and joints
  • Less neck and back pain
