Do Pre-Workout Supplements Work?

While exploring our Openfit app and blogs, you may have seen references to Ladder Pre-Workout. The container says our formula has ingredients to help increase energy and endurance while helping improve performance during your workout. But do pre-workout supplements like Ladder Pre-Workout actually work?

Ladder Pre-Workout contains carefully selected ingredients that can provide “performance-enhancing benefits that are backed by science,” says Trevor Thieme, CSCS, director of fitness and nutrition content at Openfit.

So let’s take a look at these ingredients and their benefits.

What Makes Pre-Workout Effective?

Here’s how the ingredients in Ladder Pre-Workout work, whether you’re in training for a big event or simply want more energy for your early morning exercise.

1. BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids)

Branched-chain amino acids can help facilitate muscle repair and protein synthesis (i.e., growth). In short, “they can help kick-start the repair and adaptation processes,” says Thieme.

2. Beta-alanine

Beta-alanine is another amino acid found in Ladder Pre-Workout. This one helps delay fatigue during hard workouts. “But that isn’t an acute effect,” says Thieme, adding that beta-alanine needs time to build up in your system. “It can be a powerful performance enhancer, but you need to take it consistently for about a month before you start reaping its full fatigue-reducing rewards.”

3. Caffeine

Thieme calls caffeine one of the best and most tested ergogenic (performance-enhancing) aids.

One scoop of Ladder Pre-Workout contains approximately the same amount of caffeine as an 8-ounce cup of coffee (100 mg). That amount, explains Thieme, is what “studies show is enough to help boost energy and sharpen reaction time and focus.”

Can You Take Too Much of a Pre-Workout?

When taking supplements, including pre-workout, you should always follow the instructions. If you are sensitive to caffeine or beta-alanine, start with one half a scoop of Ladder Pre-Workout, mixed into 8 to 10 fluid ounces of water, to assess your tolerance.

Does Pre-Workout Actually Help You Build Muscle?

When you strength train, you cause microscopic damage to your muscles. That’s a good thing — it causes your body to not only repair the damage but increase the size and strength of your muscles to better handle the “stress” of your workouts.

Taking Ladder Pre-Workout can help you go harder for longer, helping you to optimize the “adaptation stimulus,” as well as provide BCAA’s to help you make the most of your adaptation (e.g., by supporting muscle protein synthesis and muscle repair).

Can Pre-Workout Help You Lose Weight?

A pre-workout formula such as Ladder Pre-Workout isn’t a “weight loss” supplement, but it can help you reach your fitness goals faster by improving your workout performance. The harder and longer you’re able to work out, the more calories you’ll burn, and the faster you’ll get in shape.
