open fit hearing aids

Open-fit refers to a style of hearing aids that are worn on top of the ear with a thin tube coming from the hearing aid and going inside the user's ear canal.  There are many advantages of open-fit hearing aids including:

  • Comfort- Unlike a traditional bte hearing aid, open-fit hearing aids are so small and light weight that users often forget that they are wearing them.
  • Natural Fit - Many styles of hearing aids plug up the ears.  This is often referred to as occlusion and the people that wear the hearing aids remark that things sound like they are inside a barrel.  What makes open-fit aids unique is only some of the ear canal needs to be blocked.  In fact, unlike some other styles open fit aids allow many sounds to pass through the hearing aid naturally.
  • Ease of Fit - Open-fit hearing aids can often be fitted in a few minutes.  Open-fits have soft removable domes that go into the ear canal.  These can easily be replaced by the consumer.
  • Full Range of Power - Originally, open-fit hearing aids were just designed for mild loss.  But, with the advent of receiver-in-canal open-fit hearing aids they can now handle a wide range of loss.
